Application process overview
Please note that the Online Registration Form and the Application Form are two different parts of the application process.
- The Online Registration Form is an online Microsoft Form where you fill in and submit information and upload the required documents (Application Package and a scan of your passport(s)) to complete the application process.
-
The Application Form is a PDF that you can access via a link when you open the Online Registration Form. You will need to download, complete, sign, and include the Application Form as the first document in your Application Package. The form asks for basic personal and academic information, your preferred Year 2 specialisation, and a number of short reflection questions about your journalistic experience, academic background, research experience, career aspirations, and motivation for joining the programme. As these reflections are assessed by the Selection Committee, we encourage you to review the questions carefully and allow sufficient time to prepare your responses.
Create or reactivate your AU Account at Aarhus University (AU ID). This is required before you can access the Online Registration Form and the Application Form.
⚠️ Important: You must wait 30 minutes before you proceed!
Once you have created your AU ID, the account activation process will take 30 minutes. If you proceed before the activation process is complete, the system may generate an error message, and you will not be able to reach the submission system. We appreciate your patience.
Familiarise yourself with both the Online Registration Form and the Application Form before you begin. Within the Online Registration Form, you will find a link to the Application Form. The Application Form must be the first document in your Application Package. Reviewing both forms in advance will help you understand the requirements and prepare the necessary information and supporting documents.
We recommend preparing a draft submission of the Online Registration Form before submitting your final submission. You can do this by completing the Online Registration Form and uploading placeholder documents. Remember to tick “send me an email with my responses” and click the very last “Save response to edit” button! If you do not click this button, you will not be able to return to your draft to make changes or replace your placeholder documents.
Gather all required documents and prepare your Application Package PDF. Before you upload your Application Package, please ensure that the PDF follows the required document order and is named according to the file-naming instructions.
Application Package PDF: Required documents and document order
1. Application Form
Download and complete the Erasmus Mundus Journalism Application Form (PDF), which you will find once you have logged into the Online Registration Form. The Application Form must be the first document in your Application Package.
The Application Form provides the Consortium's Selection Committee with an overview of your personal, academic, and journalistic background, as well as your motivations for applying, before they review your supporting documents.
During the application process, you will be asked to select your second-year specialisation. Please note that this choice is final and cannot be changed at a later stage.
Within the Application Form, you will find a section entitled Application Reflections. These reflections relate to your academic and journalistic background, your motivations, and your future career aspirations. Although the responses are relatively short, they will be carefully evaluated by the Selection Committee, not only for their content, but also for the quality, clarity, and style of writing. We therefore encourage you to dedicate sufficient time and attention to this section.
2. Curriculum Vitae
Please provide a Curriculum Vitae (CV). The CV should be no more than 2 pages.
A CV (or résumé in the US) is a concise summary of your qualifications, achievements, skills, and experiences both within and beyond your academic studies.
Please include key dates and details of your:
- Educational background and achievements
- Work and internship experience
- Awards, prizes, and scholarships
- Volunteering, civic engagement, and community involvement
- Participation in societies, clubs, sports, or other extracurricular activities
- Language, IT, and other relevant skills
Civic engagement and extracurricular activities are important parts of the evaluation process and should therefore be included where relevant.
If you would like inspiration for the structure of your CV, please consult the Europass CV.
3. Academic documents
Please include official graduation certificates (if you have already graduated) and transcripts of records from all previous university and college studies. Transcripts should clearly show the degree awarded (if applicable) and the grades received for each course, unit, or module.
To ensure that the strongest candidates are admitted, the consortium gives priority to academic merit. Therefore, applicants are expected to demonstrate an above-average academic performance.
All transcripts and academic records must be official documents issued in the original language. If the documents are not in English, they must be accompanied by an English translation. Diplomas/certificates and transcripts must be translated into English and certified by either the issuing institution or a certified translator.
4. Journalistic documents
To document your professional journalism experience, please provide a signed statement from your current or former employer confirming the nature and duration of your employment. This information may also be included in your journalistic reference letter.
Work samples
Please submit three examples of your journalistic work, preferably in English. If your work is available online, you may provide links instead. Please do not submit more than three work samples or their equivalent.
If your work samples are not in English, please include a brief summary in English. You are welcome to prepare this summary yourself.
If your work samples cannot be included in a PDF document (for example, radio, podcast, television, or multimedia productions), please provide detailed information about the samples and include links where possible.
In exceptional cases, the Mundus Consortium may request additional material or ask you to submit work samples separately.
5. Language documents
The Erasmus Mundus Journalism programme is taught entirely in English. Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency at CEFR C1 level or above, unless exempt under the rules of their chosen Year 2 specialisation. Please carefully review the language requirements for your chosen specialisation here before applying
When preparing your Application Package, you must include one of the following:
- If you qualify as an automatically exempt applicant
Each Year 2 specialisation university maintains its own list of countries whose nationals are considered native English speakers and are therefore exempt from submitting an English language test. Your eligibility for this exemption will be assessed based on the nationality documented in your passport(s). If the requirements for your chosen specialisation indicate that you qualify for this exemption, no additional English language documentation is required.
- If you are required to submit an English language test
Include a copy of your English language test score report.
-
If you have already been granted a language test waiver in accordance with the waiver requirements outlined at the admission requirements site, please include the official documentation from your Year 2 specialisation university confirming that your waiver request has been approved.
- If you are applying for a language test exemption under Charles University (Prague)
Include supporting documentation demonstrating why you should be exempt from the English language test requirement (for example, official confirmation that your previous degree programme was taught entirely in English). Please note that exemption requests for the Charles University specialisation are assessed individually as part of the admission process. Submission of supporting documentation does not automatically result in an exemption being granted.
Applications that do not include the required English language documentation for the chosen Year 2 specialisation cannot be considered for admission or for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
6. Academic and journalistic reference letters
We require two letters of reference: one academic reference from a university official acquainted with your work (e.g. former professor, department head, dean, or faculty advisor), and one professional reference from a current or former employer.
The reference letters must be addressed to the Erasmus Mundus Journalism Consortium. If the reference letters are not in English, they should be accompanied by a translation certified by your home institution or a certified translator.
Please ask your referees to submit the reference with an official letterhead, and make sure that it is signed. Unsigned letters of reference will not be considered.
If possible, we prefer the reference letters to be included in the application package, but if your referees would prefer the reference to be treated in confidence, please refer them to Bettina Andersen at [email protected].
Please make sure to share the information below with your referee:

We would be grateful if you could submit the reference on an official letterhead from your institution, and make sure that it is signed. Unsigned letters of reference will not be considered.
